Horror Creatures
Don't You Love Horror Stories and Their Creatures?
Without
a doubt most of the creatures we come across in horror fiction novels
and movies are just that: FICTION. There's no such things as ghosts,
and werewolves, and vampires. Sure, they make great horror stories, and
they're certainly frightening. The
very idea of a spirit coming back to haunt us from beyond the grave is
enough to send chills down anyone's spine. And that's why we made some
of our favorite horror stories available for free download.
But we can
all rest easy in the end because they are just not real. However, there
are some creatures that are real, but more on that later.
Vampires and werewolves
are probably the most popular horror creatures. Ghosts and their
various incarnations and interpretations are a close third. The stories
and legends behind these characters are fascinating, and we'll take a
closer look at them all in turn.
Frankenstein, while a classic horror creature, is not as popular as the other three. However, Mary Shelley's character has influenced several writers, movies, and stories that run along the same path.
The purpose of any horror story is to scare or frighten. It is to cause a mental imbalance within the reader or viewer, and make them fear for their safety or the safety of others. A vampire, most popularly symbolized by Braham Stroker's Count Dracula, is a character that does just that. A vampire has enormous strength, is nearly impossible to kill, and very elusive.
Werewolves are usually portrayed as troubled characters burdened by a terrible curse. The individual has no control over their monthly change, is incredibly vicious and deadly, and also nearly impossible to kill.
Ghosts are a different creature altogether. In general, a ghost is the spiritual representation of a dead person. That spirit is able to interact and walk through the living world, yet it's not quite living. Most stories portray ghosts as having a pretty bad attitude as well. However, there have been so many spins and interpretations of the classic ghost figure, that it is nearly impossible to list any general characteristics.
Except that they're dead.
Frankenstein was the creation of a crazed scientist. In fact, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein might even be considered more science fiction than horror fiction. But the character has spawned several knock-offs and copycats and continues to be a fan favorite and a classic to this day.
These are some of the most popular horror characters. Each character is explained in depth in the menu on the side. Personally, the werewolf is my favorite, and I've written a few stories about them as well. What's your favorite fictional horror character?
