![]() Slasher Movies and The Villains We Love
A Slasher movie is more than just a scary cut 'em up flick. Sometimes they can combine elements of comedy. Very often, I've found. a Slasher movie is actually more of a horror suspense film. And while Slasher movies don't always deal with the occult, many of them demonic horror movies also. One of the earliest horror suspense slasher movies was Halloween. The antagonist in this horror franchise was Michael Myers. However, this film is difficult to categorize because Michael Myers is never defined as being supernatural or human. Halloween
on Blu Ray Two
years after the first Halloween movie was released, the first Friday
the 13th movie was released. This horror suspense slasher movie is a
little easier to categorize than
Halloween. The primary antagonist is named Jason Voorhees, and he
generally
likes to handle his business with a machete. The only reason this
slasher movie franchise
is easier to classify is because Jason appears to die and go to hell
during the
series run. Also he is portrayed as having superhuman strength. This
makes him
more of a monster and less human. The
the first 8 Friday the 13th movies from Amazon. Where Michael Myers wore a rubber mask and used a butcher knife, Jason wore a hockey mask and carried a machete. Jason seems to be driven by his love for his deranged mother. It’s not clear how Jason got his powers, but unlike Michael, Jason doesn’t appear to like killing. But he feels compelled to do so. |
The next slasher movie franchise I remember vividly as a kid was the Nightmare on Elm Street series. This one is a no-brainer. Definitely a slasher movie, and definitely a demonic horror movie. Though not really a horror suspense. The antagonist, Freddy Kreuger, is perhaps the most distinctive and recognizable of all the slasher villains. Freddy wears an ugly, beat-up hat, a red and black sweater, and gloves with knives on the fingers. The entire Nightmare on Elm Street Collection is available from Amazon.

Unlike his slasher movie
predecessors, Freddy has a definitive back story. His mother was raped by
dozens of crazed psychotics. Freddy grew up to be a despicable and evil human
who killed and tortured many children. The parents of those children trapped
him burned him alive. But before dying, three demons give Freddy the ability to
kill through dreams.
The final slasher
movie franchise I want to discuss is Child's Play. The antagonist is a serial killer
named Charles Lee Ray, a.k.a. Chucky. Chucky is shot by a cop and seeks refuge
in a toy store. Nearing death, Chucky performs a voodoo ritual that transferred
his soul into a doll. The doll eventually winds up in the house of a child
named Andy and proceeds to kill anyone who gets in his way.
Though Chucky is eventually
shot, stabbed, and burned, he keeps coming back in various sequels. Chucky does
not have any favorite killing piece; he has used guns, knives and hammers to do
his dirty work. Like Freddy, Chucky is not a horror suspense, but very often uses several comedic elements. Purchase Chucky - The Killer DVD Collection from Amazon.
