Horror of the Demonic Films

Demonic horror movies, or horror of the demonic movies, are a classic subgenre of horror and the first to make its mark on film. While keeping in mind that one horror subgenre can cross into other horror subgenres, I’ll try to give a broad definition.

Any film dealing with the undead or the supernatural would fit into this category. This includes horror films where the antagonist is a vampire, or a ghost, or a zombie, or a werewolf, or even an alien. Back in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, most of the movie watching world knew little about psychosis or mental instability. But they knew a lot about the devil and demons. It was easier for people back then to understand an evil monster such as a vampire or werewolf, than it was for them to understand a psychotic killer with bi-polar disorder.

The earliest horror movies were almost exclusively horror-of-the-demonic films. These films include classics like Nosferatu (which was just a Dracula knock-off), Frankenstein (while not necessarily demonic, it was a monster), and Phantom of the Opera. All of these demonic horror movies featured bad guys, or antagonists, that were not human, and could easily be considered monsters.

It should be noted that not all of these characters were necessarily demonic, that is, originating or dealing with the occult. Many demonic horror films that can fit into this category feature characters that have a scientific origin. Examples of this are Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Even though modern audiences don’t really go for these classic themes anymore, several of today’s films are still considered demonic horror movies. For example the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, the Friday the 13^th franchise, the Child’s Play franchise, and the Halloween franchise.

All of these demonic horror movies came into prominence in the eighties and developed cult followings. However, most of these franchises began to die in the nineties, and almost completely disappeared by the turn of the century. Horror movies that were also Slasher movies

While we’re discussing this scary movie genre, I would also like to touch on the antagonists from these movies. After all, it’s the demonic or supernatural character that makes these scary movies so popular. I would just like to focus on some of the popular demonic horror franchises from the eighties.

The horror movies in these films can also be labeled slasher movies. But keep in mind that not all horror-of-the-demonic films are slasher films, and not all slasher films are horror-of-the-demonic films. A slasher film contains gratuitous and extreme violence. This violence is usually carried out with some sort of sharp object, for example a butcher knife, clawed gloves, machete, etc.

The slasher movie becomes a horror-of-the-demonic film when the killer is not human and portrayed as a monster. In most of these demonic horror movies, the killer started off as a human, but somehow became a monster along the way. Also, the killer is usually dead, but not really dead. This makes them virtually invulnerable and unstoppable.
