Best 80's Horror Movies

Don't you miss the eighties? The leg warmers. Reaganomics. The Smurfs. Great (and not so great) horror movies.

I am a child of the eighties, and I kind of miss it. I can do without the leg warmers and Michael Jackson mania, but the movies, television shows, and cartoons were great. Especially the horror movies.

Some of the most famous horror movies of all time made their mark during the eighties. Even some slasher movie franchises that started in the seventies, became legends during the 80's. So this page, and several others besides it, are dedicated to memorializing some of these great 80's horror movies.

Well, let's start with 1980.

1980 Horror Movies

The Shining

This was Jack Nicholson at his best. The movie is based, with some divergences, on the horror novel written by Stephen King.

What happens when a typical American family finds themselves alone in a huge mansion for several months? A strange case of cabin fever, red rum, and lots of dead people.

If you're one of the five people in the world who haven't seen The Shining yet, then you need to watch it as soon as possible. There's a reason it has a cult following.

Oh yeah. You may also want to read the book too. It's also pretty good, but much different from the movie.

Friday the 13th (1980)

I heard they were making a remake of Friday the 13th for 2009. Ho-hum. It's a rare occurrence that a movie remake comes even close to the original. Maybe I'm biased, but I'm not expecting much from the new movie.

The original Friday the 13th was just one of many slasher franchises that came of age during the eighties. I have a page dedicated to the best slasher movies where I talk about the entire Friday the 13th franchise in much more detail.

Dressed to Kill

This movie was true horror suspense and seemed to inspire similar movies such as Fatal Attraction and Body of Evidence. In all the movie was trying to be a psycho thriller/suspense/horror. It wasn't really that bad, but I've seen similar movies done much better.  Dressed to Kill is not the best 80's horror movie, but certainly not the worst either.

Prom Night (1980)

Speaking of remakes....a new Prom Night was made in 2008. It cast Jamie Lee Curtis a teenager trying to escape a maniacal killer. Hmmm...sound familiar doesn't it? Now where have I heard that before?

Anyway...I suggest you watch the original Prom Night before watching the 2008 remake. Both are kind of cheesy, but at least the original had some good screams and decent acting.
