Stephen King Books - The Top Ten of All Time

The Top 10 Stephen King Books and Novels

For almost three decades, the world has been terrified by Stephen King books. Stephen King, perhaps the most popular and successful author of our time, really needs no introduction. There are over 20 million copies of Stephen King books in print, and they have been translated into dozens of different languages.

But here’s the difficulty. Stephen King has written over fifty novels and several short story collections mostly in the horror fiction genre. There also several Stephen King movies based on his many horror novels. The answer is simple. Utilize this Top Ten list of Stephen King novels.

That way, if you’re interested in watching a Stephen King movie, read a Stephen king book, or even purchasing Stephen King audio books, you’ll have a reference point for where to start.

10. The Tommyknockers
This Stephen King book was actually science fiction. A woman discovers a long buried spaceship, and the people of her town gain amazing powers. The Tommyknockers was really a strange story, but it was very entertaining.

9. The Dark Tower IV: Wizard and Glass
If you haven’t read the first three Dark Tower novels, you will not understand this story. But if you have read them, you’ll know that this novel gives us a lot of Roland’s back story. It also has one of the best shootouts I’ve ever read.

8. ‘Salem’s Lot
A town infested with vampires. Very basic, but very entertaining. This novel didn’t scare me in the least, but it was still a good read. There is also a Stephen King movie based on this book.
7. The Shining
I know the movie starring Jack Nicholson took some serious departures from the novel, but this was still a great book. What I liked most about The Shining was that many of the events were very plausible.

6. Carrie
Not Stephen King’s best work, but I had to include it since it was the one that started it all. Carrie is Stephen King’s first published work and the one that established him as the master of horror fiction. It was also made into a movie.

5. The Talisman
Written in conjunction with Peter Straub, The Talisman was one of Stephen Kings few forays into fantasy fiction. This Stephen King book was fantastic with Uzi toting werewolves, a train, a castle, and an alternate universe.

4. The Dark Tower II: The Drawing of the Three
I actually read this one before reading the first Dark Tower. I feel this is the best Stephen King book in the Dark Tower series. All I can say is this, Roland brings his guns into our world, and from that point on, I was hooked.

3. Misery
How can a book be both beautifully written, and horribly disturbing at the same time? Misery was all that and more. The quintessential horror story with no demons, monsters, aliens or ghosts. Just one crazy lady and a very unfortunate writer. Misery the movie, based on this Stephen King book was pretty darn good also.

2. It
The only Stephen King novel that gave me nightmares. That’s why it’s in the number 2 spot. With IT, Stephen King showed his ability to create long stories with elaborate plots and subplots, and several characters. The movie did not do the book justice.

1. The Stand
Not just the best Stephen King book out there, but one of the best novels I’ve ever read. The Stand was also the first Stephen King book I ever read, back when I was just an innocent fourteen year old boy. Once again, the miniseries based on this book did not do the book did not do Stephen King justice. But if you haven’t read The Stand, then you haven’t read Stephen King’s best work.
